Scene: The story takes place 10 years after the conquest of the Aztecs by Captain Cortez. He has had a child by Malinche, his translator and later his paramour.

Returning from a trip, he sees the 8-year old child "dressed as a savage" and vows to take back to Spain to teach him to be proper nobleman. Malinche strongly objects but is overruled.
